about
As a first generation Panamanian-American, on this record I chose to take the listener on a vivid tour through an impoverished Panamanian town or village better known as “El barrio”. What does the barrio look, sound and smell like? Who lives there? What struggles are those people faced with? How do they survive? Do the people in the barrio have any hope? or must they leave the barrio to succeed?
This record is a first-hand depiction of the barrio through my childhood’s eyes. These were Summers when my parents would pull me away from the suburban life I was accustomed to in Maryland and into the lifestyle they once left behind. This record also sheds light on the African Diaspora in Panama as well as the beauty of Panama’s Indigenous peoples. It exemplifies what being a proud Afro-Latino feels like and how music, love and happiness can still reign supreme in a village with little expectation from the outside world.
